I'm quite in the mood for story telling, but I know given my standard I'll never be able to write a legit story book, so I'll just write it in a blogpost instead hahah!
This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.
Once upon a time, a girl called Riley met two guys, NanXing (for simplicity sake let's call him Nan) and Augustine (let's call him Gus).
They were both really sweet guys, and had a lot to offer Riley.
I guess it's always like that during the chasing period before the actual relationship starts.
Full of sweet-talk, unconditionally compromising, you know the drill - They both promised a stable long-lasting relationship, promised to financially support her, love and care for her.
It was almost like those Korean drama series where two extremely eligible guys chases after a girl, but she has to make a decision somehow.
And to be fair to the guys and herself, she chose to only love one.
Knowing that Nan hangs out with more home-y, more family-oriented friends, while Gus hangs out with clubbers and liked to party etc, Riley thought that Nan would be a more wholesome partner better suited for her own character.
She apologised to Gus, thanked him for having interest in her, made the final decision of loving Nan and never looked back.
The day Riley agreed to be with Nan, they went out on a date at a little cafe.
Nan told Riley that his ideal age to get married was 3 years later, and Riley nodded happily!
Their relationship started out pretty good. As expected of the usual honey moon period.
Riley would always go over to Nan's place, bake him cakes, buy small presents for him, ask him about his day etc.
She would try her best to do all sorts of sweet things that she'd thought would matter to Nan and would touch his heart.
"If by doing this I can make your day better/ make your job easier/ help you out with your busy schedule, I'll do it!" Riley often said to Nan with a smile.
Regardless of whether Nan really bought her lots of gifts, or really pampered her or not,
she just wanted to prove to Nan that even without money in their relationship, she wanted to love him unconditionally.
All she wanted was Nan's time, care & attention, since he was the one she decided to spend her entire youth on.
2 years plus passed in a blink of an eye, and the cracks in the relationship started to appear.
Riley noticed that Nan would always have something bad to say about what she's wearing for dates, or the way she does her hair, or the way she carried herself.
"You're dressed so childishly. Why can't you be more matured like other girls?"
"Why don't you try this style? This girl looks good."
Sad thing is, when guys say things like that, while they think it's just a mindless passing remark,
girls cry themselves to sleep at night brooding over those words.
"When he told me he loved me, he already knew what I looked like, how I like to dress... why the sudden change?"
Countless sleepless nights passed where Riley would ask herself this question over and over again.
But because of her love for him, Riley decided to change herself to suit Nan's liking.
She dressed differently, spoke differently, did her hair differently...
She tried to convince herself Nan must have had his reasons for saying those things, and she really wanted to believe Nan was good for her.
During their relationship, even when her friends told her that Nan was bad for her and he was lying to her, Riley would continue defending Nan because she didn't want to give up on their relationship so easily.
From time to time, boys would try their luck to ask Riley out, no strings attached, just a one-off thing.
But without fail, Riley would always direct them to Nan, "If you ask Nan and he's okay with it, then I'm okay."
Throughout the 2 going 3 years relationship with Nan, Riley tried her best to be compromising and understanding every time Nan disappoints her.
Of course, she was always very thankful when Nan does nice things for her (like going on simple dates with her.. although it's pretty much what a boyfriend should do actually).
As for the things she didn't like, she tried to communicate with Nan about them, although most of it falls on deaf ears.
"I understand... I will do my best", Nan assures.
But alas, nothing changed.
When it's an imbalanced relationship where one party keeps giving and the other keeps taking, the strain will inevitably be felt.
There's never been a time where Riley requested for a gift or anything from Nan. Not once.
But there's been one thing on her mind lately - She's been dreaming about a trip to Korea for the longest time, and really wanted Nan to go with her.
When Riley finally mustered her courage and brought up the trip to Nan, without hesitation, Nan brushed it off with a "I'm busy, I have other priorities at the moment"
Her heart sank.
That was the last straw.
Riley impulsively booked a flight and flew to Korea all alone in tears.
I guess it was then a switch flipped inside Riley's mind.
When you love someone so much, and finally realise that despite all you've given to the other party, nothing was appreciated, noting reciprocated, and you aren't even their priority anymore... that immeasurable love quickly turns into hate.
"Well, since you told me your ideal age for marriage was next year, let's not waste time and end things NOW since we're so incompatible."
"I'm sorry, what do you mean?" Nan replied nonchalantly.
"I mean, since you dislike the way I dress, look, speak, and wish that I could be like the other girls all the time, why should we still be together? And now I'm not even your priority anymore.."
"Perhaps you forgot, you promised to get married with me in 6 years' time?"
"What 6 years' time?" Riley said in confusion.
"My mum has already prepared all the dowry, and told all of our relatives of this. We will get married in 3 years' time. You can't back out now." Nan insisted.
Shocked beyond words, Riley's legs gave way as she plopped onto the ground in disbelief.
Her mind whirling with flashbacks of what he said when they first got together.
She could swear there was no mention of 6 years, no mention of promises...
Plus if he no longer loves her, why does he insist on tying her down...?
TO BE CONTINUED.
Have you guys met anyone like Nan in your life before?
Sometimes people really need to learn to walk away because enuff is enuff.
